Our restaurant 'Brasserie Bie de Groeve' was named after its position; the Curfsgroeve (a quarry) can be found nearby. This quarry lies hidden between the forests on the slopes of Geuldal. Marl, chalk rock that can be used for all sorts of things, was extracted from this quarry for more than seventy years. For instance, marl was used for the production of cement by heating it in the chalk ovens. Some of those chalk ovens nearby are currently undergoing renovations. Also, marl blocks were (and still are) often used as a building material in this region. The house next to the Brasserie is a good example of that. The Brasserie's industrial interior reminds you of the history of marl extraction in this area. You really do have to come and see for yourself!
